JHT Team Supports Manatee Rescue In South Carolina
Dec. 22, 2016, Orlando FL
A team of JHT employees in Charleston, South Carolina joined a collaborative and successful effort in rescuing four endangered manatees. The rescue mission took place over the course of two days and involved several national, state and local agencies.

A drop in water temperature within the Cooper River and a warm water outflow, adjacent to the KapStone Paper Mill, caused the marine mammals to go off course which distanced them from essential food resources and their natural habitat. Representatives from KapStone saw an opportunity to assist with the safety of the manatees by monitoring them and reporting their activity back to the rescue team.

On December 8, JHT associates Brian Balmer, Brian Quigley, Eric Zolman and Todd Speakman (all representing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) joined U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Sea World Orlando Rescue Team in locating and capturing the adult male and female manatees. They were reported healthy after careful examination and subsequently returned to the wild near Port St. John in Brevard County by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission later that same day. Additionally, on December 9, the same crew located and rescued two male manatees and successfully returned them to Florida around 9pm.
